Explore Creativity with Clay: My Experience Hosting the Asobi Workshop at JANM in Los Angeles
Share
Have you ever experienced the magic that happens when creativity and community come together? This summer, I was invited to host the "Clay Knot and Object Workshop" at the Japanese American National Museum in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles. It was exciting to spend time with about 60 attendees in the museum, sharing the evening in the main hall while enjoying the beautiful sunset.
In the workshop, we focused on our signature cultural knots. While playing with clay, I explored forms and shapes that symbolize unity, peace, love, and more. These culturally inspired knots serve as both practical decorations and emotional reflections of my heritage, showcasing the depth of my artistic expression. We took some time to slow down and started sketching. It was amazing to see everyone's ideas and how each person drew inspiration from their daily lives.
We shared experiences and stories through art-making and conversation. It was inspiring to see how everyone approached their pieces—some were deeply focused, having moments of reflection, while others were enjoying time with friends, discussing their work under my guidance.
The workshop amazed me with how enjoyable it was to meet people and spend time together creating. I connected with others through conversation, sharing experiences and ideas. It turned out to be a wonderful experience, and we all had so much fun being creative.
